Tigers' Bank on Behnke to Claim Wood Bat Title

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

This years' Spring Wood Bat Final had all the makings of a competative championship contest. The always tough SFV Tigers; who are looking for their 3rd wood bat title; versus the league's newest threat .... the Reds. The game was still scoreless as we entered the top of the 3rd inning. With 1 out in the inning, the Tigers' bats came to life. David Decker, Garrett Behnke and J.C. Collins hit consecutive singles, followed by Adam Geery who hit a 2-run double. The Tigers settle for 2 runs to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers came up in the top of the 5th inning; still leading by a score of 2-0. Pitcher Garrett Behnke, who walked and singled in his 1st two at-bats, drew a leadoff walk and stole 2nd shortly thereafter. He was followed by J.C. Collins who singled to right, scoring Behnke. Adam Geery follows with a walk and a pass ball advances him to 2nd. Two batters later, Steve Nelson singles; scoring two. The Tigers get 3 runs in the inning;
now leading the Reds by a score of 5-0.

The Tigers come up to bat in the top of the 6th inning; still leading by a score of 5-0. Pitcher Garrett Behnke is throwing a gem in this contest thus far; and he leads off the inning with a walk; putting him on base safely in 4 consecutive at bats. He's followed by J.C. Collins who also walks. Adam Geery follows with an RBI single. Kevin Enright also singles; with a run scoring on a pass ball shortly thereafter. Steve Nelson grounds into a double play; but gets an RBI as a run scores on the play. The Tigers add 3 more runs to their lead; now up by a score of 8-0 through 5 1/2 innings of play.

At this point in the contest, it was obvious that Tigers' pitcher Garrett Behnke is completely dominating the Reds; all but shutting them down on offense. And it doesn't get any rosier for the Reds in this championship; as the Tigers add 3 more runs in the 7th and 6 more in the 9th. The SFV Tigers win in very convincing fashion; routing the Reds by a final score of 17-0. Congratulations to the 2010 Spring Wood Bat Champion Tigers for such a solid season and for such a dominating championship win!

The choice for Championship MVP in this contest was clear. Tigers' pitcher Garrett Behnke was just remarkable. He pitched a complete game shutout; allowing only 4 hits while striking out 14! And if that wasn't enough, he reached base safely in all 6 at bats; with 4 walks, 2 singles and an RBI for good measure. Congratulations, Garrett ... on a most memorable performance!
