Tournament Recap by Dennis Swartout

Labor Day weekend normally brings families together for picnics and barbecues. This Labor Day instead, it brought together twelve teams from San Jose to San Diego to compete in the first annual Labor Day Passport to the World Series Tournament hosted by the Southern California MABL

Ten MABL teams and two MSBL teams took the field in pursuit of winning fourteen player entries into the 2000 MABL/MSBL World Series. On Saturday, every team had high expectation but by Monday morning only four teams remained.

The PCBL Tinsel Town Terror was the only team to go 3-0 and they faced off with the wild card team, the So Cal MSBL Blue Jays. The Blue Jays took an early lead and with each passing inning seemed to hold it or extend it. The big blow to the Terror came in the seventh with Vince Woods and Fred Russell of the Jays went deep on back to back homeruns.

In the other semi final game it was the San Jose Orioles VS the PCBL Titans who the night before downed the Blue Jays 7-4. The game went back and forth but the San Jose Orioles took a two run lead into the bottom of the ninth. With one out and two men on, Marlon McKinney slammed a line drive home run over the left field wall to win the game.

The finals saw the PCBL Titans facing the So Cal Blue Jays again for the second time in two days. The Titans scored first but the Blue Jays answered back in the second with two runs on Kevin Maxie's first homer of the game. In the bottom of the inning the Titans matched that with bombs from Kakl and Malone to tie it at three. Then the So Cal Jays went on a tear and posted eight unanswered runs in the next 4 innings. The attack was lead by Gray and Muggs with a homer each and Maxie with his second, a grand slam in the sixth as Jay's pitcher Darrin Fleming keep the PCBL Titans off the bases.

In the seventh and eight the Titans fought there way back into the game with six runs of there own with Orlando Chavarria hitting a grand slam in the eight to knock the Jays pitcher out of the game.

In the ninth, the Titans once again mounted an attack. Down by four, they loaded the bases with one out. A hit batter scored a run and keeps the bases packed. The next batter grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and give the 30+ So Cal Blue Jays the Championship.

Special thanks to James DuPrey, President of the PCBL for his help as assistant tournament director.
