Blue Cudas bust Giants to cap off perfect season

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

A cold November evening in the Sylmar foothills would be the backdrop for this years' Fall Wood Bat Championship at El Cariso Park. The #2-seeded; defending Fall champion Giants against the top-seeded and 9-0 Blue Cudas who are looking at an undefeated season with a win tonight. The stage was set for some serious PCBL championship baseball action .... so lets get right to it!

Both teams are scoreless in the opening inning; sending the Giants up in the top of the 2nd to try and strike first in this championship. Juan Sanchez leads off with a single to become the Giants first baserunner of this contest. Mike Granger follows with an RBI single to put the Giants up 1-0.

But the Blue Cudas strike back fast in the bottom of the inning. Justin Collins sparks the Blue Cuda offense with a leadoff single. Jhavik Mahon follows with a single of his own; as did Brandon Loomis. Jarod Kaplan also slaps a single. When all is said and done, the Blue Cudas get 4 big runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead through 2 innings of play.

The Blue Cudas come up in the bottom of the 3rd inning; still leading 4-1. Justin Collins reaches on a fielder's choice; and advances to 2nd on a fielding error. Jhajik Mahon comes up with 1 out and 1 on and he hits a 2-run homer to put the Blue Cudas up 6-1 through 3 innings of play.

The score of this championship contest would remain 6-1 as we entered the bottom of the 5th inning. The Blue Cudas' Eddie Baeza is hit by a pitch to start off the inning. He reaches 2nd on an error shortly thereafter. Chris Cervantes also reaches on an error. Adam Geery follows with a sacrifice fly to center; scoring the runner from 3rd. Two batters later, Justin Collins responds with an RBI single. They settle for 2 runs in the inning; now leading the Giants by a hefty 8-1 margin.

The Giants' Mike Granger would lead off the top of the 9th inning; still trailing 8-1 and only 3 outs away from surrendering their title to the 'Cudas. Granger slaps a leadoff single for his 2nd hit of the ballgame. He scores 2 batters later on a fielding error. The Giants get the single run in the inning; but fall short as the next 3 batters would go down in order.

Congratulations to the Giants for once again putting themselves in the wood bat final.
They are definitely a force to be reckoned with in the wood bat division and I'm sure we'll see them here again.

But this evening belonged to our new 2011 PCBL Fall Wood Bat Champion Blue Cudas! They strip the Giants of their Fall wood bat title in convincing fashion; and have now claimed the title of being this years' undefeated champs! Congratulations to the Blue Cudas on a terrrific season from start to finish!
