La Onda Pitcher Pac Prevails in Spring Title Victory

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff writer

It was a hot afternoon on this last day of Spring for the battle between La Onda and the division champion White Sox. University High School in Irvine was the setting for this Triple A Championship .... and the stage was now set for some PCBL Championship baseball. With that being said, let's get right to the action ...

The White Sox would come up in the bottom of the 3rd inning in a scoreless contest. Leadoff hitter Tyler Reece walked; but was forced out as Jeff Miller grounded into a fielder's choice. Center fielder Jeff Grampp doubled home Jeff Miller, but was gunned down trying to reach 3rd. The White Sox end up with 1 run in the inning; taking the early 1-0 lead through 3 innings of play.

Then it was La Onda's turn to get their bats going. The first 2 batters reach base due to fielding errors. Albert Zerega follows with a single; followed by Nick Nelson who reaches by way of a fielder's choice. Kris Hernandez responds with a 2-run single. Sam Goriel contributes with a 2-run double. La Onda come up with 4 runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings of play.

The White Sox would get one back in the bottom of the 4th. With 1 out, Matt Gustin singled; followed by RJ Bellegue who also singled. Two batters later, left fielder Matt Clement doubled home Gustin. They end up with 1 run in the inning; now trailing by a 4-2 margin.

La Onda would come up in the top of the 8th inning; still maintaining the 4-1 lead. Leadoff hitter Eric Lingrin starts things off with a leadoff triple. Two batters later, JC Coleman singles him home. They would settle for the lone run in the inning; now leading the White Sox by a 5-2 margin.

And that's how it would end; as the White Sox could only muster one more hit in the last two innings of play. Congratulations to the 2010 PCBL AAA Spring Champion La Onda squad for holding on to win this championship! MVP honors would once again go to a starting pitcher. La Onda's Pac Gutierrez went the distance in this contest; allowing 2 runs on 10 hits, walking 3 and striking out 7. Congratulations, Pac ... on a solid championship performance!
