Dragons Slay Team Easton to Claim Fall Championship
By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

El Cariso Park in the Sylmar foothills was the backdrop for this years' Fall Wood Bat Championship between Team Easton and the Dragons. Both teams finished the regular season with impressive 9-1 records; leaving no doubt that his would be a hard-fought and competative fall championship. With that being said, let's get right to the action!

The Dragons come to bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the game still scoreless. Cleanup hitter Victor Reyes gets a leadoff walk. Alberto Medina follows with a single to left center. J.C. Barker responds with an infield hit. With 1 out and the bases full; Jesus Cabrera reaches on a throwing error by the catcher, with 2 runs scoring on the play. Richard Lizarraga draws a walk; followed by Robert Cortini who gets an RBI single to left. Peter Curiel then walks; followed by Brian Harbord who hits a sacrifice fly to left.
When all is said and done, 4 runs cross the plate for the Dragons who breakout for the early 4-0 lead.

The Dragons would come to bat in the bottom of the 3rd; still leading 4-0. With 1 out, Bobbo Marcial reaches base by way of a fielder's choice. He steaks second moments later, and then reaches 3rd on a throwing error. Marcial scores when Tim Kim grounds out to 1st. The Dragons settle for the lone run in the inning; now leading 5-0 through 3 complete innings of play.

We entered the top of the 6th inning with the score still 5-0 Dragons. Team Easton's Case Gergen reaches base when he is hit by a pitch. He steals 2nd soon after. With 1 out in the inning, Marty Orozco Jr gets on base due to a fielding error. A few moments later, Team Easton pulls off the double steal; with Orozco to second and Gergen scoring. Team Easton settle for 1 run in the inning; trailing 5-1 through 5 1/2 innings of play.

This would prove to be the last run scored in the contest; as the Dragons would hold on to beat a solid Team Easton squad by the final score of 5-1; thus claiming the title of 2012 Fall Wood Bat champions. Congratulations to both teams for their solid 9-1 seasons; and to the Dragons for pulling out the win. The MVP for this contest was indisputable. Dragons starting pitcher Mike Soto was, in a word, solid. He pitched a complete game; allowing a single run on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 7. Congratulations to our Championship MVP Mike Soto on a great performance!
