2010 PCBL Fall AAA-Division Championship Sun. 12/05 @ 1:00pm / Conejo Creek Park Cudas' -vs- Hammers 'Cudas Demolish Hammers in Fall Final Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer
This was the 2nd game of our championship double-header at Conejo Creek Park in Thousand Oaks. It was a cold and breezy afternoon with thunderclouds threatening in the distance; but the field was still perfect for championship competition. With that being said, let's get right to the action!
The Hammers get on the board in a hurry in this contest. They lead off with Kenny Bernas who drives one deep to right field for a solo homer. Two batters later, Josh Miranda singles to right. The next batter flies out to center; sending up pitcher Simon Lee who singles to left. Jake Miranda comes to bat with 2 on and 2 out. He singles; driving in a run. The Hammers settle for 2 runs in the inning to take the early 2-0 lead.
However, the Hammer lead would prove to be short-lived. The Cudas go to work in the top of the 2nd. Nick Gontmaher gets a leadoff double to left. The next batter is Kevin Enright. He drives one to left for a 2-run homer. Pitcher Larry Kowalsky follows with a walk. Rick Rob then reaches base due to a fielding error. Three batters later and with 2 out in the inning, Jarrod Schwartz singles to right; scoring 2. The Cudas end up with 4 runs in the inning to take a 4-2 lead through an inning and a half of play.
The Cudas come up to bat in the top of the 3rd; still leading 4-2. Nick Gontmaher leads off and he is hit by a pitch. He steals 2nd soon after. Two batters later, Larry Kowalsky singles him home. Two batters later, Jay Wasserman singles home Kowalsky. The Cudas get 2 runs in the inning; now leading 6-2 through 2 ½ innings of play.
The Hammers are shut down offensively in the 3rd and 4th innings; sending the Cudas up to bat in the top of the 5th inning with a 6-2 lead and a ton of confidence. This is where the wheels truly come off for the Hammers as the Cuda offense explodes.
In the 6th and 7th innings alone, the Cudas compile an unbelievable 12 runs on 12 hits! They add a pair of runs in the 8th for good measure, but the damage was more than done. The Cudas claim their record 8th PCBL title in grand fashion … demoralizing the top-seaded Hammers by a final score of 20-3.
Congratulations go to the Hammers for having an exceptional season. They brought an 8-1-1 record into this championship; but the experience and power of the Cudas were just too much to handle in this contest. We'll definitely see them here again!
