Valley Woodys -vs- Outlaws
Woodys Edge Outlaws in Championship Final
By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer
This was the first game of our Championship triple-header at the beautiful confines of the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga; home of the Quakes .... the single A Angels affiliate. This is one of the more picturesque baseball venues around. With the beautiful mountain range over the wall in left field, it's the perfect backdrop to the pristine conditions between the lines. With the field in mint condition and the weather more than favorable, the time was definitely right for some championship baseball ..... so let's get right to the action!
The Outlaws draw first blood in this contest in the bottom of the 1st inning. With 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, Jeff Brooks hits an RBI single to right center field. The Outlaws settle for the lone run; leading 1-0 through an inning of play.
The score would remain 1-0 Outlaws as we entered the top of the 4th inning. With 1 out, the Woodys' Steve Luna singles for his 2nd hit of the ballgame. The next batter would walk; sending up Robert Garcia with 2 on and 1 out. He singles to score a run. The Woodys settle for 1 run in the inning; tying this championship at 1 apiece.
We would remain locked in a 1-1 tie as we entered the top half of the 9th inning. The Woodys' Rico Pena starts the inning off with a single. He is sacrificed over to 2nd by Jose Avila who lays down a bunt. The next batter is Steve Luna who grounds one hard off the glove of the shortstop and towards 2nd base. The ball is fielded and a throw is made to the plate to attempt to get the runner coming from 3rd, but the throw is late and the run scores. The next batter is Jose "Chicken" Gallegos who, on the very 1st pitch, singles down the left field line to score a run. The Woodys end up with 2 big runs in the top of the 9th inning to take a 3-1 lead in this Championship.
But the Outlaws have one more shot as they come to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning. With the first batter flying out to right; the next batter is Josh Morton. He is hit by a pitch to reach 1st; then reaches 2nd on a pass ball shortly thereafter. The next batter strikes out; sending up Craig Tolan with 2 out and a runner on 2nd. He promptly singles; scoring Morton. They now trail by a single run with the tying run at 1st. Brian Fatur is the next batter and the potential winning run. He singles to left; putting runners at 1st and 2nd. However, the next batter would strike out, leaving the tying run stranded at 2nd base.
Congratulations to the 2010 AA Division Champion Woodys for pulling out the victory in this very tight contest! And hats off to the Outlaws who came to play and kept it close; giving themselves a chance on this Championship Sunday.
